The long story of Paris coming to the world.

Chris’ Comments

Baby Paris decided to join our family a little early. She was born on April 3rd at 8:27 pm. She showed up about 3 weeks early, which made us a little nervous. Helena noticed Saturday morning while watching conference that Paris had not been moving very much. So we decided to go to the hospital to check everything out. The doctors found out that she was not doing too great and made the decision to go ahead and perform the cesarean that same evening. Helena did awesome and she is doing great now. There were not any issues during the procedure, but I could tell that the doctors were a little concerned about Paris right from the start. She came out kind of little, only weighing 5 lbs 4 oz. she is still pretty long though at 18 ½ inches.

Paris was having a hard time breathing so the doctors put an oxygen mask on her. Doctor Leptich had warned us before that some babies who are born a little early need to have oxygen to help them breath. So Paris was on oxygen for a few hours, but wasn’t making much progress. Helena was in recovery at this time, so it was just the two of us. I got to hold her for about 20 minutes to help her calm down when she got mad at all the shots. She was getting the oxygen she needed while the mask was there, but her oxygen continued to drop when it was removed or when she got really mad. The doctors said that Paris’ problem was that her lungs were not keeping pressure in them, so she was struggling to open her lungs to breathe. She kept making a grunting sound, which they said was a sign of not being about to keep her lungs open.

After a few hours of the mask, the doctors then put a breathing tube on her to see if that would help. They did this for a few hours, but she still wasn’t making progress. She was still fine when everything was there, but wasn’t breathing well on her own. So the next step for her was a c-papt machine. These machines not only put oxygen into her, but also pressure to help inflate her lungs. She has to wear a little mask and get an IV. She is a little trooper though and has been great through the whole thing. She is resting quite a bit since she is getting all her nutrition through the IV and she is getting her oxygen through the machine. She has been on the machine all night and is doing better this morning. They were able to reduce the amount of oxygen she was receiving and the amount of pressure. She is stable and still doing really well.

The hardest part of the situation is that we don’t get to spend a lot of time with her. She is in a different room hooked up to the machines and she is resting all the time. We are not able to hold her or touch her very much since they are trying to minimize her stimulation to help her relax as her lungs learn how to work. Helena has been able to go in a see her throughout the day and I am spending as much time as I can with her, but it is just hard since I feel pretty helpless and worthless just sitting there watching her. I try talking to her to let her know someone is there for her that cares for her, but she is too little to let me know if she knows me.

So far, she has been stretching her skinny little legs and making lots of little noises. She has really long skinny feet and tiny little toes and hands. She has been sticking her tongue out and has already done the little lip quiver that her brothers do when she gets really upset.

We are so excited to have our little girl as part of our family. We cannot wait until she is completely healthy and strong so she can actually join us and we can spend time with her. Her brothers came to see her today, but they were not allowed to go in to see her. They were kind of disappointed that they couldn’t see the baby and it took a lot of explaining to Gavin as to why. I am sure it is really hard on Helena not being able to hold her little girl, but the good thing is that Helena is getting lots of time to rest and get better herself. It is nice not having to worry about Paris since she is being taken care of by lots of nurses and doctors.

The doctors think that after today she will be able to come off the machines and breathe all on her own, but she probably won’t be able to go home until Friday or Saturday. Hopefully everything continues to work out well and both mom and baby keep doing fine.

Helena’s Comments

Chris has been wonderful at being with Paris when I can’t. I do hate that I can’t hold her all the time. Now I am feeling good and am moving about when ever I want. Monday I got up at 3:00 am and went to see Paris. While I was there, they took off her off the breathing machines for 10 min then put her back on. I went back to bed until 8:00 am, went back to see her and they had just taken her off the machines again. I was allowed to hold her for the second time. The first time was when I was on the table being put back together after the c-section. It was nice being able to hold her for a few minutes. Then the nurse decided she needed to have a breathing tube, which is a step better. So she is back to sleeping and resting. I am staying at Banner Gateway until Wed and I keep hoping that she will be good enough to come home with me, but they keep reminding me that she might have to stay the remainder of the week. I am doing great the nurses are impressed about how well I move around. My parents, and Mike and Amy have been wonderful about taking care of Brody and Gavin. Chris’ mom Diana was planning to be here to help on the 21st. Diana and Becky changed their plans and are driving down from Utah tomorrow to help with the boys and see Paris. We are doing good and are excited to have Paris with us.
